Let's be real — have you ever walked into an art exhibition, stared at a painting, and thought: “Umm... what am I supposed to feel?” That was me. For years. I used to think art shows were just for “art people.”
But after visiting a few exhibitions (and feeling completely clueless), I figured out a few simple ways to make the experience easier and actually... fun. Let me share what worked for me 👇
At first, I stressed myself out trying to understand every piece. But here's the thing: you don't have to.
Art isn't always meant to be “explained.” It's more about how it makes you feel.
My tip:
Pause at a piece and ask yourself:
Do I feel calm? Curious? Uncomfortable?
What does this remind me of?
That's already engaging with art in your own way.
I used to skip the descriptions (too many words!). But now I realize they help a lot.
You'll usually find the artist's name, the medium (oil, acrylic, etc.), and a little backstory.
Why it matters?:
Even just knowing the title or year can shift how you see the work. One time I thought a sculpture looked cold and weird — then read it was made during lockdown. It suddenly hit different.
Don't overwhelm yourself trying to remember every piece. Instead, I pick 1–2 artworks I really connect with and spend more time with them.
Try this:
Take a photo (if allowed)
Write down what you liked
Checking the artist later (I discovered some cool Instagram pages this way!)
Sometimes I go with a friend and we talk about our thoughts after — super fun! But honestly, going alone can be amazing too. You can move at your own pace and follow your curiosity.
Bonus: Grab a coffee after and write down your thoughts. It turns into a mini reflective moment 🧠☕
Photos are great, but I try to take a quick snap after I've looked at the art properly. Don't just “see with your phone.” Look with your eyes first.
My habit:
30 seconds looking
1 photo max
Then move on and soak up the space
That's it, Lykkers! 💛
If you've ever felt awkward or lost at an art show, you're not alone — I totally get it. But once you stop trying to be “right” and just feel your way through it, art starts to make a whole lot more sense.
Have you been to any exhibitions lately? Or do you have your own tips for enjoying art? Drop them in the comments — I'd love to hear what you do! 👇
